Generic Uloric (Febuxostat)

Common use

Uloric is prescribed to treat chronic gout by reducing high levels of uric acid in the blood. It works by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in uric acid production. Lowering uric acid helps prevent flare-ups, joint pain, and long-term tissue damage.

Dosage and direction

Uloric is taken once daily, with or without food. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose, often starting low and adjusting based on uric acid levels. Take the medication at the same time each day. Do not stop taking Uloric even if symptoms improve unless instructed by your doctor.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, stroke, liver problems, kidney disease, or organ transplant. Uloric may increase the risk of cardiovascular events in some patients. Regular blood tests may be required to monitor uric acid and liver function.

Contraindications

Do not use Uloric if you are allergic to febuxostat or any components of the medication. It should not be used in patients taking azathioprine or mercaptopurine due to dangerous interactions.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include nausea, joint pain, rash, and mild liver enzyme elevation. Serious side effects may include chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, severe rash, or signs of liver trouble. Seek medical help immediately if you experience symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.

Drug interaction

Uloric can interact with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, theophylline, and certain chemotherapy medications. Always inform your doctor of all prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or more severe reactions. Seek medical attention immediately if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Uloric at room temperature, protected from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
