Generic Savella (Milnacipran)

Common use

Savella (milnacipran) is prescribed for the management of fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and sensitivity to physical pressure. It works by balancing levels of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain, which can help reduce pain and improve physical function.

Dosage and direction

Savella is taken orally, usually twice daily. Treatment typically begins with a titration schedule to reduce side effects, gradually increasing to the target dose as directed by your healthcare provider. Tablets should be taken with a full glass of water and may be taken with or without food.

Precautions

Before taking Savella, inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, urinary issues, bipolar disorder, or a history of seizures. Avoid alcohol, and be cautious when driving due to possible dizziness. Do not stop the medication abruptly, as withdrawal symptoms may occur.

Contraindications

Savella is contraindicated in individuals allergic to milnacipran or any formulation components. It should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping them. It is not recommended for patients with uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include nausea, headache, constipation, increased heart rate, sweating, dry mouth, and dizziness. Serious side effects may include high blood pressure, serotonin syndrome, liver problems, severe allergic reactions, or suicidal thoughts. Seek immediate medical help if severe symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Savella may interact with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs), triptans, tramadol, St. John’s Wort, and medications affecting blood pressure or heart rate. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose if needed—do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include severe agitation, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Savella at room temperature, away from moisture, light, and heat. Keep tablets in the original container and out of reach of children and pets.
